Salisbury v Reading Match Report

28/07/12  Salisbury City 1 Reading 0

As part of their pre season schedule the Whites faced a strong U21 team from Premiership side Reading. Salisbury started with a strong side themselves with new signings. Chris McPhee, Jamie White and Theo Lewis all in the starting 11 and Mark Scott on the bench.

The first half saw Salisbury have the majority of chances with the closest falling to Dan Fitchett, the ball spinning to him clear in front of an open goal after Grant Smith in the Reading goal sliced a clearance. However he couldn’t control the shot and he pulled it just wide.

Some great football was being played by Salisbury and they also managed to restrict Reading to a couple of chances the best by Jake Taylor pushed on to the post and away by Will Puddy.

The only goal of the game actually came in Injury time at the end of the first half. Dan Fitchett was bought down in the box then stepped up and converted the penalty himself sending the keeper the wrong way.

The second half saw plenty of early pressure from the home side with Matt Clarke seeing his 53rd minute 18 yard strike rattle the bar. They couldn’t add to their tally though before both sides started making multiple changes.

Reading still looked dangerous and on 70 minutes Salisbury sub Rees Baggridge had to clear his own lines but City held on to a good win  Darrell Clarke will be pleased with this winning performance. A good pre season run out and plenty to show that with a little more depth added to the squad they could be title contenders.
