Match report: Totton vs Whites

Submitted by on August 8, 2012 – 2:05 pm

The Whites registered a comfortable victory in their annual pre-season clash against an organised AFC Totton side at the Testwood Stadium.

Theo Lewis broke the deadlock for City from close-range and after 64 minutes Dan Fitchett secured a 2-0 win with a sharp finish in their penultimate friendly on Tuesday evening.

During the opening exchanges, Mike Gosney tested Will Puddy with two well-caught strikes and James Clarke fired over, after he weaved his way through the Totton defence.

But it was the full-timers who struck first-blood inside 24 minutes, as youngster Lewis comfortably tucked away Ugo Udoji’s inviting cross.

And Robbie Matthews, back in his orthodox striking position, had two good chances to extend the visitors’ lead. Firstly, he sent a lob past a post and then guided a header straight into the palms of Gareth Barfoot.

Twenty minutes into the second-period the Whites doubled their advantage when Stuart Sinclair’s clever approach play was slotted into a bottom corner by Fitchett.

In the later stages, Chris McPhee unleashed a free-kick which he skied into the stands and Jonathan Davies released in a corner into the side netting.

Assistant manager Mikey Harris said: “It was a really good work out for the team and once again they showed some positive signs. Dan and Theo also took their goals well.”
