Darrell Clarke spoke to the club website today about the current squad situation.

As he begins preparing for life in the Football Conference the manager confirmed he is to release six members of the current squad – Mark Scott, Ugo Udoji, Matt Clark, Robbie Matthews, Rhys Baggridge and Cameron Hough.

Clarke explained this decision has been the most difficult of his career. He said: “All of these lads have played a massive part in this season’s success. And they leave the club with our utmost respect and thanks for their efforts.

“Any manager who enquires about one of these players will get a glowing reference from myself and Mikey.”

He continued to explain that decisions are yet to be made regarding the future of Will Puddy and Charles Ademeno.

Meanwhile, after on-going injury problems, Chris Giles and Luke Ruddick have been invited to prove their fitness during pre-season.

Clarke confirmed the following players have been offered contracts: Theo Lewis, Dan Fitchett, James Clarke, Brian Dutton, Callum Hart, Ryan Brett, Stuart Sinclair and Robbie Sinclair.

“We’re hopeful these players will join the three we have already signed – Jamie White, Ricky Wellard and Chris McPhee,” said Clarke, “We’re also in discussions to bring in some new faces ahead of what is a hugely exciting time for Salisbury City. Keep checking the website for the latest news about our squad.”

Salisbury City eventually overcame Dover Athletic by three goals to two after a tense 30 minutes of extra time in the Playoff final at the Ray Mac on Sunday. Goals from Wellard, Sinclair and White were enough to counter Simpemba and Bricknell’s dramatic but scrappy strikes and send the home fans into deliria at the end of 120 minutes.

Salisbury seemed to settle into the game much faster than Dover, who seemed rather overawed by the occasion with miss placed passes left, right and centre. The home side did not capitalise on their early advantage though and it didn’t take long for Dover, calmed by the midfield dominance of Daryl McMahon, to gain a foothold in the match. After 19 minutes, McMahon added an extra dimension to the game by finally taking the first shot of the afternoon. Although it went comfortably wide, it was a rare event in a cagey first half that left us disappointed with just two shots on target that Puddy easily gathered.

The second half started much brighter and a driving run from Ricky Wellard resulted in a free kick for Salisbury right on the edge of the D. An injured Wellard picked himself up and curled an absolute pearler of a strike around the wall and into the back of the net. That proved to be Wellard’s last action of the match though as he had to be replaced by Ryan Brett. Six minutes later, the home side had a glorious chance to double their lead. Stuart Sinclair found Chris McPhee inside the box with an inch perfect pass. McPhee squared the ball straight to the feet of Jamie White, but Salisbury’s leading goal scorer could only slice his shot over the bar. With just four minutes of normal time remaining, Dan Fitchett was put through on goal but Daryl McMahon cynically brought him down and consequently received his second yellow card and was sent off. There was a real feeling of expectancy around the ground when the red card was shown but just three minutes later, one from time, Dover proved you cannot just defend with ten but you can also attack. Ryan Brett gave away a free kick 35 yards out that Lloyd Harrington drilled towards the edge of the penalty area. The shot took a wicked deflection off Ian Simpemba and rolled into the back of the net, leaving Puddy and all of the Salisbury fans just gazing, speechless.

As the game went into extra time, Salisbury’s plan was clear, keep the ball and stretch the tired ten men of Dover. After just seven minutes, this tactic bore fruit as a lovely passing move ended with Glenn Wilson slotting the ball through to Scott Sinclair who delightfully chipped it over the keeper. In the 111th minute, The Whites wrapped the game up with a stunning volley from Jamie White. Dan Fitchett chested the ball down to him 25 yards from goal and he struck a sweet half volley over the keeper and into the bottom corner of the net. Between then and the final whistle, Stuart Sinclair and Dan Fitchett both spurned glorious opportunities to pile more misery on the Dover fans and players. They looked like they might rue those missed chances as Robbie Matthews failed to clear a long ball and Billy Bricknell came off best against Willem Pudd, leaving him the simple task of rolling the ball into the back of the net. The Whites held on though and as the final whistle blew, a flood of fans invaded the pitch and shared in the players celebrations. Many of the stunning crowd of 3,408 stayed to watch captains Brian Dutton and Chris Giles lift the trophy and the scenes will stay with all of us for many a long year.

You may become aware of a winding up petition having been filed by HMRC on Salisbury City football club and which was lodged with Companies House on Wednesday.

The club were contacted on 2nd April by HMRC for a total debt of £43,629 consisting of 2 months of PAYE and 1 quarters VAT.

On 10th April the club paid the VAT and 1 month’s PAYE totalling £27,529. This left one month of the PAYE remaining totalling £15,270 to be paid.

On 26th April the club was surprised to be served with a winding up petition dated 11th April for the full £43,629 giving the club until 10th June to clear the debt.

We contacted our debt manager at HMRC that afternoon who confirmed receipt of the payments but that as the winding up petition had already been served that it could not be withdrawn until the remaining £15,270 plus their fee of £830 had been paid.

The club have now made this payment.

As Chairman, I am sorry if this situation has caused the fans and staff of the club any anxiety. However, as you can imagine, myself and the Board were none too happy that HMRC felt that it was necessary to issue proceedings, particularly as we had paid a substantial amount before the petition was issued.

The Board would like to clarify that all of the CVA payments were made on time and in line with requirements and that these finished in December 2012.

The Board would also like to confirm that all staff wages including players have all been made and are up to date.

The Chairman and the Board now look forward to the Play-Off final on Sunday and congratulate Darrell Clarke, his management team and the players for a wonderful season.

William Harrison-Allan
Chairman
